Harmful gambling often starts as entertainment and later takes more time, money, and emotional energy than intended.

Behavioural signs

  • Spending more time or money than planned, or chasing losses.
  • Hiding spending or lying to family.
  • Neglecting work, study, or sleep because of gambling.

Emotional signs

  • Irritability when someone raises the topic or when you try to cut down.
  • Anxiety or low mood linked to bets or debts.
  • Using gambling to escape stress or painful feelings.

In Canada

Routes differ by province. A family doctor, nurse practitioner, or regulated mental-health clinician can discuss next steps. Charitable and public-health resources include CAMH (information), Responsible Gambling Council (education and standards context), and Gamblers Anonymous (peer meetings where available).
