CBT and problem gambling: plain-English basics
What cognitive behavioural therapy often focuses on—educational summary, not a treatment plan.
Editorial guide—not sponsored, not a substitute for professional advice. We do not sell treatment and do not earn commission from organisations mentioned.
We are not therapists. In Canada, regulated titles and scopes differ by province (for example psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, and counsellors may be governed by different colleges). Verify anyone you work with through your provincial regulator’s public register.
CBT links thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. With gambling, it can mean mapping triggers (stress, boredom, arguments) and beliefs (“this time I’ll win it back”).
Example goals
- Delay impulses (e.g. 10–15 minutes).
- Replace gambling rituals with planned activities.
- Challenge unhelpful ideas about luck and “systems”.
Research often supports structured psychological therapies for gambling disorder alongside practical tools (money plans, self-exclusion). Ask a regulated clinician what is available and funded where you live.
