When gambling hurts at home: conversations in Canada
Talking without shaming, and getting support for you if you are affected by someone else’s gambling.

Gambling harm is not only “one person’s habit”—it can affect money, trust, and safety across a household.
If you gamble
Choose a calm moment; share truth in small steps; say you want to change and will contact a qualified service. Avoid big confrontations in the immediate aftermath of a loss.
If you are a family member
Long lectures in the heat of an argument rarely help. Use “I” statements (“I’m frightened about our rent”) rather than permanent labels. Be cautious about paying someone’s debts without qualified debt advice.
Support for you
Look for family services through provincial mental-health routes and community organisations. If you are in Ontario, ConnexOntario can help you navigate options.
